Do you suffer from occasional delusions of adequacy?
Welcome to the club. Thinking that we’re not worthy is one of the most pervading symptoms of being human.
We rarely think we’re deserving of happiness or success. We’re so highly judgemental of ourselves that we prefer to wallow in our self-criticism, obsessively second-guessing our every move, compulsively wondering how others might perceive us, rather than just allowing ourselves to feel content.
We must no longer doubt ourselves.
We’ll never feel adequate if we continue to waste all of our mental and emotional energy by trying to manage a figment of our imagination—our sense of self.
Why are so concerned with how other people might see us? Because we believe their indictments of us.
As long as we place value in the materialistic world of appearances, then we’ll forever remain unhappy.
What one person hates, another person loves—so, who’s right? And where does YOUR opinion enter into the equation? Appearances and opinions change direction as often as the wind. In reality, who really cares and why does it matter?
The truth is, it doesn’t matter; but as long you believe it does, then it will continue to dominate your entire life.
Bleh! It’s far easier to just be done with it all.
You cannot control how another person considers you. It is entirely their issue, no one can think their thoughts but them. You already know this to be true. A person's view of the the world is merely an interpretation, one that's influenced by their past experiences and memories and by their present beliefs and opinions.
And so, as it’s often been said before, we do not see things as they are, we see things as we are.
The quieter our “self” becomes—that critical voice inside our head—the more content we will become, and the easier we will be able to get on with the art that is our very life.
The “self” that we are so constantly worried about must be exposed as the illusion that it truly is. We must realize—with no uncertainty—that the self we identify with is nothing more than a bundle of always-morphing subjective beliefs that merely form the concept of “me”.
But, “me” cannot be a concept. Are you not real? If so, then who or what are you?
You are the awareness that perceives, you are not what it perceives. Your sense of self is merely a false perception. Abandon it.
We must remain ever-mindful of this truth. No matter how vociferous and convincing your “selfing" thoughts become, they are no different than a barking dog. While you might not be able to stop the barking, you can certainly change your relationship to the barking. No longer take it seriously. No longer allow yourself to be swayed by it. Tune the noise out. Once ignored, your troubled thoughts will settle.
The false self cannot exist without your attention because that is precisely what it is made of—your awareness, your energy, and your imagination.
Observe your selfing thoughts and nullify them, one by one—destroying every falsity you find. Do not settle for anything less. Search for the truth behind every thought, behind every belief, and behind every perception. See them as illusions from a grasping mind that hasn’t yet realized its true self.
Don’t let any miscreant selfing thoughts creep through the gates of your belief.
When you notice the act of selfing arise within you, ask yourself, “Who is this me that I’m so concerned about?” Respond to your self-criticism with the following words: Not me, not mine, and not myself.
You experience your “self” just as you would a dream, but you are not what that self experiences. You are merely aware of what the false experiences. You have experiences, but “you” are not them.
None of it is real. This is the dream of your self. It’s time to wake up!
Remember this the next time you are troubled by something. Don’t let your thoughts define you any longer.
Your true self is boundless and is beyond any such limitations of opinion.
Flourish in the beauty of the real, rather than languishing in delusions made from mind.
